The principal economic base for the area is agriculture and forestry. Agriculture is the predominant land use in Jackson County, with more than 60 percent of the land in the unincorporated area of the county in agriculture. Jackson County is Florida's top peanut-producing county. Other products include beef cattle, cotton, corn, and soybeans. There are also many government facilities in Jackson County, including a federal prison and three state correctional institutions. The prison industry is Jackson County's second largest employer.
